03/09/08 - Kazakh President addresses crisis in Georgia

“The situation in the Caucasus is a major topic of global discussion… We call on sides to get down to talks based on the six points put forward by Presidents Medvedev and Sarkozy” said Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev in an address to the sitting of the Kazakh parliament's two chambers in Astana yesterday (2.9.08).

“We urge Western countries and Russia to stop reproaches and threats - and settle the issue on the basis of underlying principles of international law… It is important to help the aggrieved people of both South Ossetia and Georgia. Kazakhstan is already sending some aid to the conflict zone” said Mr Nazarbayev.

“Through the prism of these events” added the President, “we learn to evaluate what we [in Kazakhstan] have achieved since gaining independence: prosperity, peace, political and economic stability, inter-ethnic and inter-faith tolerance, duly demarcated national borders, friendly relations with neighboring countries… Today our responsibility is to maintain and multiply the inter-ethnic and inter-faith accord as well as partnership relations with the international community”

Kazakhstan maintains excellent relations with Russia, the US, the EU, NATO and Georgia - and is the most economically powerful and internationally integrated state in Central Asia. Some experts look to Kazakhstan to serve as a mediator between Russia and the West to promote dialogue and real solutions to the current crisis.
